Snake Highs

Look at a property map of the Snake River Sporting Club, and it suggests there is just one golf course on the piece of land it occupies in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
But ask the man who has already teed it up on the Tom Wieskopf design and he will tell you otherwise.
“It’s like playing two different courses," head pro Matt Fawkes says. “The front nine is just over 3,500 yards and lined by lots of trees, whereas the back is just short of 4,000 yards and has wide open fairways. That makes it really fun.”
The yardage total seems daunting until elevation is accounted for. Snake River Sporting Club is at 6,300 feet – high enough to make even the short hitter fell like “Long” John Daly.
So where’s the challenge? In the wind that Fawkes says has a tendency to swirl. And in the surroundings that provide the natural distraction one could want.
“We are blessed with an extraordinary setting,” says Weiskopf, whose layout is wedged between majestic, Ponderosa-carpeted hillsides. “If it isn’t the best piece of property I have worked on in the U.S., it is tied for first.”
Weiskopf’s latest creation sits within a 554-acre parcel of terrain that is mostly government protected. That means that while 130 homesites make up the club’s residential component, few are in view from the course.
The river, however, is another matter; it can be seen from virtually every hole. Fishing enthusiasts are wise to pack their fly rod. “There are enough cutthroats to lure you away from the fairway,” according to the club’s official website (snrsc.com).
Then again, who says a player won’t be content with just standing on the first tee box?
“From No. 1, you look right down the canyon, across the Snake,” Fawkes says. “And from No. 10 tee, you look up the valley, and can see the entire back nine. It’s absolutely breathtaking. Players are going to be awestruck out here.”
