Higher Ground

Our fondest childhood memories are often associated with the summer vacations our families took: the endless days spent water-skiing on the lake; waking early for the morning fly-fishing trips with dad; horseback riding and golfing the afternoons away; and the warm evenings spent sitting on a mountain cabin’s front porch swing.

Recreating those memories—and creating new ones with our own children—is often the most compelling reason to buy a vacation home.
So, when Estates West Golf Living started looking for the very best summer destinations and developments in the western United States, our research led us to higher ground—the Rocky Mountains.
Running from northern New Mexico into Canada, the Rockies have proffered enjoyment and opportunity to many generations, and yet, in the 3,000 miles of ranges that make up the mountain chain, there are a select number of destinations that rise above the rest.
The Tetons
The first thing that strikes you when flying into Jackson, Wyoming, is the awesome Teton Range, rising from the earth like the sharp, uneven fangs of a saber-toothed tiger.
Then, as you begin to explore, you encounter a second magnificent treasure, the Snake River. The proximity of these two natural riches gives the Jackson Hole valley more than just good looks; they provide venues for a wide variety of action sports: snow skiing; fly-fishing and river rafting; hiking and backpacking in the millions of acres of national forests, parks and wilderness areas; and pedaling over wide, bicycle-friendly roadways.
Now, with the addition of several highly-acclaimed golf courses built in the last few years, a whole new dimension of fun has been brought to the region.
Set between the Snake River and the Bridger-Teton National Forest (3.4 million acres of preserved public land) is the Snake River Sporting Club. This 554-acre private residential community is just 15 minutes from downtown Jackson and is anchored by a gold course of which its designed, Tom Weiskopf, is obviously proud. “If it’s not the best course I’ve designed in the United States, it’s in the top two,” he says. That’s high praise (and just a little spin) from today’s premier architect of mountain golf layouts.
A member’s lodge, a spa, a sports barn and an equestrian facility are all slated for a 2007 opening, and a mountain lodge was just acquired in nearby Teton Village so club members can take advantage of the area’s world-class ski slopes come wintertime.
