"We're not something for everybody!" says Peter Pollak, president of DPS Development. Although he and Steve Schram, chairman, don't cater to all crowds, they do offer something very special for a discerning one.

Pollak, a longtime real estate guru, and Schram, former president of the company that owned the Boston Celtics, were formally brought together in business by way of the Ford Plantation near Savannah, Ga. As the name suggests, the property once belonged to the famous automaker of the same name; today, that charming patch of earth is shared by many home owners as it houses a nostalgic, modern-made development. The well-bred residential project, for which Pollak and Schram saw great potential and realized it, also started their partnership, which in turn put them down the path to more projects.

The other communities currently composing the DPS portfolio--Greenbrier Sporting Club (White Sulphur Springs. W.V.), Snake River Sporting Club (Jackson, Wyo.), Turks and Caicos Sporting Club (British West Indies), Deep Water Cay Club (Grand Bahama Island)-- are also beautiful, expansive nooks where the well-to-do can pursue lives of leisure and fitness against a backdrop of natural, cultural and resort-caliber amenities. The sense of place within each club is unmistakable; and whether that felling emerges from the land, the water or the history there written, the DPS crew considers their job--and that of their residents--to be stewards of each environment and the sentiments stemming from it.

Therefore, location is everything. "You can do a lot of things, but you can't create or re-create great property," Schram says. "You always want to enhance something; you don't want to take away from it." As a result, all structures--the single family estates, fitness facilities, golf courses, equestrian centers and more--adhere to strict architectural guidelines that honor each community's distinctive landscape. DPS homeowners will always encounter a cohesive look inside a setting that lends wonderfully to kicking back, being social and mastering their sport of choice (perhaps with the help of an on-staff expert).

Now that DPS has mastered their sporting-club concept, they will continue to stay and play, so to speak. "We are positioned now, very selectively, to take it to other locations," Pollak says. And where the company goes next will depend, of course, on the location--in the West or otherwise
